THE ARTIST
Kateřina Šedá
(b. 1977, Brno, Czech Republic)

Kateřina Šedá's social projects are playful, poignant and often profound in what they reveal about human nature. She begins each of her participatory works by undertaking rigorous research into patterns of behaviour and communication among the subjects of the project. These have included villagers from the Brno area, the citizens of Prague, her neighbours and her own family, as well as communities in foreign countries. The projects themselves usually take the form of games, in which the players are at once the producers and participants, actors and audience, in a communal experience. 'Every work originates in a different way,' Šedá says. 'I often happen upon places, town centres or communities, where I see a problem or a state of unease and I try to change things.' In 2011, her project From Morning Till Night was staged in the area surrounding Tate Modern. Aiming to explore the social dynamics of two very different places, Šedá invited 80 people from a small village in the Czech Republic to re-enact their everyday activities in this alien environment.

In the artist’s own words:

“Unknown girl, Acquaintance on sight, Demonstrator, Daughter, Granddaughter, Little wife, Madam, Keyhole - Key, Katy, the Šedá, girl

Homeless Man, Window Exhibition, There Is Nothing There, Raising Children, It Doesn’t Matter, Her Mistress , For Every Dog A Different Master, Over And Over, Der Geist Von Uhyst,  No Light, Mirror Hill, From Morning Till Night, Líšeň Profile, Gimme a Break!

Whenever one of my actions ends, it’s clear to me that I can’t pull it off in a gallery. I’ve tried practically every available means, but I still haven’t succeeded in finding a more precise form of getting the message across than direct INDOCTRINATION of the spectator face-to-face. Often something goes on inside people during the action itself, perhaps partly because a better form of opening up simply doesn’t exist. For this reason I decided this time to indoctrinate the spectators into myself. I am not exhibiting any objects, but the full concentration of the public must be drawn primarily to my presence and to the journey I will lead everyone present on. Still, I expect that they will draw my attention, and by means of common focus we will shift things that I myself could not move.

You can experience indoctrination, opening, discovery, transformation, surprise, passing on, viewing, lecture, inquiry, confession, statement, testimony, recitation, radiation, focus and indoctrination into Kateřina Šedá during this 24 hour action.”

This performance will be conducted in Czech with consecutive English translation.
